Chennai: Two expelled functionaries of the ruling AIADMK have been detained under the Goondas Act for setting ablaze a 14-year-old school girl at Sirumadurai colony near Thiruvennainallur village in Villuppuram district on 11 May.
Sources said based on the recommendations from District Superintendent of Police S Jayakumar, Goondas Act were slapped against the two former AIADMK functionaries G Murugan (52) and K Kaliyaperumal (60) by District Collector A Annadurai.
The incident took place when the girl, daughter of a petty shop owner Jayapal, was alone in the shop, when the duo came to the shop, doused her with kerosene and set her on fire.
The girl, who sustained more than 70 per cent burns, was rushed to Villupuram Government Medical College and Hospital (VGMCH) at Mundaiyambakkam, where she died.
Based on the dying declaration given by the girl to a Magistrate, the duo were arrested and murder cases were slapped against them.
Police quoting preliminary investigations said an eight member gang, including Murugan and Kaliyaperumal, were arrested a few years ago for assaulting Jayapalâs brother and they were subsequently enlarged on bail.
