TN says it won’t accept special status to Anna varsity if reservation is not followed

Chennai: Tamilnadu Higher Education Minister K P Anbazhagan today said the State government will not accept the Institute of Eminence (IoE) status to Anna University, if the Central government refuses to allow the 69 per cent reservation system.

The Minister’s comments have come at a time when the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development’s deadline to the varsity to submit the letter of commitment by 31 May has ended.

Earlier, university officials had urged the government to provide a letter assuring to grant its share of funds, which would help the institution receive Rs 1,000 crore and more autonomy, in addition to the IoE tag.

The letter would require the Tamil Nadu government to assure providing its share of funds for IoE status.

Anna University Vice Chancellor MK Surappa had said that the Tamilnadu government need not make any compromises on existing policies or administrative structure.
