Colombo: Sri Lanka’s National Elections Commission has announced that Parliamentary elections will be held on 5 August.
The country’s National Elections Commission’s Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya
said that the new date was decided following a unanimous decision reached between the members of the NEC, Deshapriya told reporters on Wednesday.
‘We have signed the gazette (announcing the date) and sent it to the government printer’, he said.
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on 2 March dissolved the Parliament, six months ahead of schedule, and called for snap polls on 25 April.
However, the election commission in mid-April postponed the elections by nearly two months to 20 June due to the coronavirus outbreak in the island nation.
Last month, the commission informed the apex court that the polls cannot be held on 20 June because of the raging coronavirus pandemic.
