Chennai: Tamilnadu, which is currently in the second spot in the country’s Covid-19 numbers, added over 2,500 new cases on Sunday, taking it near the 60,000 mark.
According to Health department, Tamilnadu reported its highest single-day spike of 2,532 coronavirus cases on Sunday. With this, the total count of virus cases in the State stands at 59,377.
With 53 deaths due to Covid-19 reported in the last 24 hours, the toll has risen to 757. The State now has 25,863 active cases. After the biggest contributor Maharashtra, which currently has more than 1.2 lakh cases so far, Tamilnadu remains one of the worst-hit states in the country in terms of coronavirus cases and deaths.
Sunday also marked the first of the ‘total Sunday shutdown’ where only hospitals and allied health services would be permitted to function. Even groceries and shops selling essential items were not allowed to open on Sunday.
This is part of the larger lockdown that the State government is implementing in four districts- Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet- that are badly affected in the State. This was implemented after the State witnessed a steep rise in cases following the Unlock 1.0 norm relaxations.
