Chennai: Haryana’s Rajinder Goel, one of the best and unluckiest cricketers of India, has died today at his residence in Kolkata. He was 77.
Goel, who had been keeping unwell for some time, held the record for most wickets in the Ranji Trophy, 637. The left-arm spinner’s First-Class career lasted from 1958 to 1985.
Rajinder Goel never played for India but was regarded as a fine left-arm spinner who played during the era of Bishan Singh Bedi. Goel played 157 first-class matches, most of them for Haryana, and finished with 750 wickets.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly joined the cricket fans in mourning the death of Rajinder Goel terming him a ‘giant of domestic cricket’.
“The Indian cricketing community has lost a giant of domestic cricket today. His staggering record tells you about his craft and the control he had over it,” Ganguly said in his condolence statement.
Ganguly was joined by secretary secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal, both of whom condoled the death of former left-arm spinner who played for Patiala, Southern Punjab, Delhi and famously Haryana.
