Chennai: The rate of diesel has surpassed the price of petrol for the second day in a row in Delhi as fuel rate hiked for the 19th day today. Petrol price was hiked by 16 paise a litre while diesel price went up by 14 paise a litre today.
In 19 days, the price of petrol has gone up by Rs 8.66 per litre while diesel price has gone by a higher margin of Rs 10.63. In Chennai, Petrol is being sold for 83.18 and diesel for 77.29.
Speaking to the media, IOC chairman Sanjiv Singh said that Wednesday’s hike saw diesel prices going past petrol in Delhi due to a hike in VAT there.
He said VAT is lower in other cities which has meant diesel remains cheaper than petrol. “The Delhi government had increased VAT on petrol from 27 per cent to 30 per cent and that on diesel from 16.75 per cent to 30 per cent on 5 May,” he said.
