Auto driver N Kumaresan

Chennai: Close on the heels of Sathankulam tragedy in Thoothukudi district, in which a father-son duo allegedly died due to police attack, an autorickshaw driver who was beaten up by cops at the Veerakeralampudur police station in Tenkasi district, has died in Tirunelveli Government Medical College and Hospital.

N Kumaresan, who was just 25, was allegedly assaulted by the police in a land dispute case. He had been undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Tirunelveli since the second week of June.

A first information report was registered against two policemen, who Kumaresan’s father Navaneethakrishnan identified as Sub-Inspector Chandrasekar and Constable Kumar, only after the man died.

According to Navaneethakrishnan, the police personnel punched his son on his back and attacked his genitals.

“They kicked him on his genitals and the chest with their boots, stood on both legs at the same time causing unbearable pain on his genitals and below the hip, made him bend and punched on his back,” he said.

Meanwhile, videos of policemen abusing a street vendor and her son in Coimbatore, beating passersby with lathis in an undisclosed location and damaging weighing machine at a grocery shop in Ambur have gone viral on social media.
