Chennai: Observing that the Madras High Court itself had observed that murder cases have to be filed against the police personnel allegedly involved in the custodial deaths of father-son duo in Sathankulam, the Opposition DMK has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami or else allot the Home portfolio to another person.

In a statement here, DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin cited the High Court observations and said the Judges based on the post mortem report had concluded that there were several wounds on the bodies of Jayaraj and his son Benicks, who had died due to police brutality on 22 and 23 June respectively.

Condemning the Chief Minister for trying to deliberately conceal the truth by stating that Jayaraj and Benicks had died of health complications, Stalin said Palaniswami, who holds the Home portfolio, has lost the moral responsibility to continue in the post and demanded his immediate resignation.

“If Palaniswami is not willing to quit, at least he should allot the Home portfolio to other person’, Mr Stalin said and demanded that cases of murder under Sec 302 of the IPC should be registered against the police personnel involved in the deaths of the father-son duo and arrest them immediately.”

He also said all those who had abetted this ‘double murder’ should be arraigned as accused in the case to ensure that all those involved in it would be punished and the families of Jayaraj and Benicks would get justice.
