Chennai: The CB-CID team which is investigating the Sathankulam double deaths in police custody are conducting inquiries with five more police officers.
The investigation is taking place in the CB-CID office in Thoothukudi. It is said that the men could be taken into police custody.
Currently, five police men, including Inspector of the police station Sridhar, two sub-inspectors and a head-constable are lodged in jail and are facing murder charges in connection with the death of Bennix and his father Jayaraj who were allegedly tortured in police custody.
Bennix and Jayaraj died on 22 and 23 June respectively following their arrest on June 19.
Police picked up Jeyaraj for keeping his shop open beyond the curfew time. When his son Bennix went to the station, he too was taken into custody and the duo were allegedly brutally beaten inside the police station.
The police initially claimed the duo were arrested for violation of prohibitory orders, but that claim has come under question.
However, the case is embroiled in several controversies as the FIR version contradicts the CCTV visuals. The FIR stated the duo resisted arrest and rolled on the floor causing internal injuries. The police said they threatened the policemen. However, the CCTV showed only Jeyaraj was present at the shop and he did not create a scene when the police came.
Corroborating eyewitness accounts, a woman constable who was on duty at the station gave an account of how the duo were tortured by police.
