Chennai: Tamilnadu Electricity Minister P Thangamani has refuted DMK president and Leader of Opposition M K Stalin’s charge that the government was burdening domestic consumers by charging exorbitant electricity charges.
According to the Minister, electricity tariff in Tamilnadu was the lowest in the country. He added that more than 70 lakh consumers were benefiting from the free 100-unit scheme, introduced by the former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
DMK members across Tamilnadu today staged a state-wide protest against the ‘high electricity bill’ for consumers.
DMK functionaries held a black flag outside their residence and raised slogans against the government over the bills. The functionaries also distributed notices to people explaining the protest.
The decision to stage protest today was taken during a meeting convened by DMK president M K Stalin with all DMK district secretaries, MPs and MLAs through videoconference recently.
A resolution passed in the meeting said, “While states like Kerala and Madhya Pradesh announced a relief over electricity bills, the Tamilnadu government is refusing to announce any such relief and people are suffering due to the high electricity bills. The government fines people when they step out during lockdown and seize their vehicles. If people stay indoors, they are slapped with high electricity bills.”
