Chennai: The Vellore Prison authorities have withdrawn all the perks and leniencies enjoyed by Nalini Sriharan after her alleged attempt to kill herself inside the jail premises.
A day ago, Nalini during an inquiry on a complaint against her reportedly attempted to kill herself.
The complaint against her was that she was treating another inmate as a helper and harassed her. During the inquiry, she took a piece of cloth and strangled her neck to kill herself.
However, the prison authorities have claimed that she did not attempt to take her life but threaten the jail staff that she would do so. This being a violation of prison rules, her perks are being removed.
Nalini was given certain leniencies inside the jail as she is one of the longest serving jail inmate in the country. She has spent nearly 30 years in jail for her involvement in the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur.
However, an inquiry is being ordered into the case as Nalini has never displayed such behaviour in the past and it is suspected that the jail staff tortured her.
