Injured elephant dies in Nellimalai reserve forest area

Coimbatore: A ten-year-old male elephant, which suffered an injury on its palata during a fight with another male tusker about ten days back, died at Nellimalai reserve forest coming under Mettupalayam Forest Range Friday.

Sources said the injured tusker was found lying on the ground by the frontline staff at Sundapatti section of Nellithurai reserve forest a couple of days back.

But the forest officials and veterinarians could not approach it as there was herd of elephants in the area.

Veterinary doctors started treating the tusker, which has been starving and could not eat due to the injury, from yesterday by administering 31 bottles of glucose, but it died without responding to treatment.

The veterinarians came to the spot Friday morning around to resume the treatment and found the Pachyderm dead.
