Chennai: At last, the daily Covid-19 cases, whose numbes were growing at an alarming rate in Tamilnadu, have started slowing down. Officials who are happy over the development, however say the measures will continue as lowering guard might compromise the gains made so far.

Health Minister C Vijayabaskar said the time taken for cases to double has increased in Chennai. In other districts too, the doubling time has come down, due to measures initiated by the State government, he said.

Speaking to reporters, he added, “The recovery rate in the State has increased to 77.8 per cent, and the total number of patients discharged has climbed up to 2,08,784.”

Stating that the government has increased bed capacity to 1,18,000, he added: “Many of these beds have been fitted with oxygen supply, at a cost of Rs 76 crore. Infrastructure for Covid treatment has been created in every taluk and non-taluk hospitals across the State.”

Cases dipped in Madurai as only 40 persons tested positive, weeks after they started soaring. With 40 cases, Madurai recorded the lowest number of fresh cases in the zone along with Tenkasi (45) and Ramanathapuram (47).

While the western zone reported 398 cases, districts in the central zone reported 381 cases. Coimbatore reported 228 cases, while all other districts in the central and western regions reported a double digit rise.
