New Delhi: Tamilnadu is in a catch-22 situation. While the good news is that the number of daily Covid-19 cases is steadily coming down in the capital city of Chennai, the death rate in the State is reaching new levels each day.
The number of fresh Covid-19 cases in Chennai fell below 1,000 on Friday, for the first time in 52 days, while the State recorded its highest toll with119 deaths.
One of the major reasons attributed to the steady decline in the infection in the city has been the increase in sample testing – averaging around 12,000 in the last few days, said officials.
Chennai’s fresh cases dipped below the 1,000 mark for the first time in the past over two months. The State capital had recorded 809 cases on 2 June and from the next day, the infection count crossed the 1,000 mark.
Talking about fatalities, officials blamed comorbities and said they are taking all steps to save lives. Friday was the fifth day of 100 plus deaths and ninth day of less than 6,000 fresh cases in Tamilnadu.
On 29 July, Tamilnadu recorded 6,426 fresh infections and the total positive cases was 2,34,114 on that day.
