Chennai: On the eve of Independence Day, the State Police ensured that the lockdown remained strict by arresting those violating the rules.
Since 24 March, in order to curb the spread of Covid-19 and to enforce social distancing, the State police have been arresting those who ventured out during curfew.
Nearly, 9,66,998 persons were arrested by the Tamilnadu police for venturing out despite a lockdown.
Nearly 8,75,100 violations have been recorded by the police in various districts and FIRs have been registered against them, a press release from DGPās office said.
As many as 6,80,247 vehicles were seized from these persons. However, the vehicles are being returned to their owners in a phased manner. A total amount of Rs 20,53,51,588 has been collected from violators as fines.
