Chennai: An advocate of the BJP today made a mention before the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court seeking permission to install idols of Lord GaneshĀ on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations on 22 August.
When advocate Ramasamy made a mention, a Division Bench of Justices M Sathyanaraynan and P Rajamanickam agreed to hear the matter if it was filed in the form of a petition.
In his submission, the petitioner cited the Tamilnadu government order prohibiting installation of idols of Lord Ganesha in public places citing the corona pandemic and the lockdown to prevent spread of the virus.
The government also banned taking out processions and rallies and immersing the idols in the sea and other waterbodies.
He pointed out that no other state has imposed such a restriction and only it was banned in Tamilnadu and sought a direction to permit installation of idols in public places by adhering to all safety norms and other precautionary measures.
The petitioner also sought to quash the Government Order banning installation of idols, processions and immersion of idols in waterbodies.
It may be recalled that the BJP had opposed the government’s decision and demanded its withdrawal, the Hindu Munnani said it would defy the orders and install 1.5 lakh idols across the state as planned earlier.
