Chennai: From Tamilnadu, its neighbour Andhra Pradesh has snatched away the  dubious distinction of ‘second worst-hit State’ in the country by coronavirus.

With 10,603 fresh Covid-19 cases reported on Sunday, Andhra Pradesh surpassed Tamilnadu to emerge as the second worst-affected State in India after Maharashtra.

This is the second time this month that Andhra reported over 10,000 cases five days in a row. Earlier this month the State had reported more than 10,000 Covid-19 positive cases a day for five consecutive days till 9 August, and for three consecutive days in the previous week.

The latest count pushes the state’s tally to 424,767, which includes 99,129 active cases. According to Andhra’s public health bulletin on Sunday evening, 88 more persons succumbed to the infection in the 24 hours till Sunday morning, pushing the death toll in the state on account of Covid-19 to 3,884.

According to figures, though Andhra Pradesh has conducted the highest number of tests per million population, its positivity rate too is on the higher rise. The last one lakh cases were added in just 10 days.

A total of 36,66,422 tests have been done in Andhra Pradesh while the positivity rate stands at 11.59 per cent, third highest in the country after Maharashtra and Karnataka. Tamilnadu’s positivity rate stands at 8.93 per cent.
