Chennai: Actor Rajinikanth, who is expected to float his politcal party soon, has congratulated DMK veterans Durai Murugan and T R Baalu for getting elected unopposed as the party’s general secretary and treasurer, respectively.
In a Tamil tweet, he said, “My heartfelt wishes to my respected friends Durai Murugan and T R Baalu for getting elected unopposed as the party’s general secretary and treasurer.”
“There were no other contenders for both posts. Hence, they were elected unopposed,” DMK sources said. However, the two will assume their positions after after the DMK general body approves the election as per party by-laws during the 9 September virtual meeting.
DMK’s general council is the highest policy-making body of the party. Elections for the post of general secretary, the second most powerful position, was necessitated after incumbent K Anbazhagan, a fellow traveller of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, died on 7 March, 2020.
Since Durai Murugan decided to resign his treasurer post to contest for general secretary, election was announced for treasurer as well. The DMK has convened a virtual meeting of the party’s general council on 9 September.
