Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, who has donated his eyes, formally signed the eye donation form as part of donating his eyes after launching the National Eye donation fortnight organised by the state government. He also received the eye donation certificate from Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan.
Speaking on the occasion, he also requested the people of the state to come forward and donate their eyes and create a blindness-free society.
Palaniswami also launched the eye donation portal www.hmis.tn.gov.in/eye-donor created by the health and family welfare department and said those wishing to donate their eyes could register it in the website and get the certificate online.
Stating that 68 lakh people in the state were suffering from cornea problems, with majority of them being children and youth, he said thanks to the advancement in technology, if a person donates his eyes, it gives vision to two people and the other parts of the eye were used as per the treatment and surgical needs.
He said the portal to encourage eye donation was launched as a majority of those who wish to donate their corneas were not aware as to how and where to donate their eyes.
“This portal is to create an awareness on eye donation among the people and encourage it”, he added.
