Amazon Prime Video’s popular standup comedy format Comicstaan gets a Tamil adaptation after 2 successful seasons in Hindi. It is out today (11 September).
Celebrated comedians such as Praveen Kumar, Karthik Kumar and Rajmohan will be mentoring and judging contestants over 8 episodes as they find the next best Tamil standup comedian.
The show is hosted by actress Vidyulekha and Mervyn Rozario.
Produced by Only Much Louder (OML), Comicstaan Tamil has been directed by Arjun Karthikeyan and written by D Jai Adhitya and Mervyn Rozario A are the writers of the series.
Speaking to News Today, Karthik Kumar, says, ‘We are confident as stand-up comedians, we can sway audience with our presentation. But to be a judge to pick right talent was challenging. We have to bring the best from our contestants and make sure they improve gradually over the weeks in the show’.
‘We mentored them and when they were on stage we felt we were like parents waiting to see their kids write their exams well, he adds.
We had auditions across cities. The participants were not new to performing comedy on stage. May be not full-timers in it. To select final six and put them to the grind for eight episodes was a challenge’, adds Karthik.
Praveen Kumar on his part said, ‘At a time when people are stressed out due to corona outbreak, Comicstaan will provide laughter and try ease them to an extent. It is a special humour show. Here we Judges become mentors and encourage and motivate participants’.
‘We have influenced them in any way. First round they were raw in their performance and as the show progressed we gave inputs and try polished their skills’, adds Praveen Kumar.
Vidyulekha, who anchors the show, says, ‘ I have been in films for eight years doing comedy. But to do a show like this was challenging. I was in the midst of talented stand-up comedians. I felt being missed on stage. Thanks to Comicstaan it was fulfilled. To perform before live audience gives lots of energy. I hope that I delivered my best’.
On his part, Mervyn Rozario says, ‘It is an unique show and there is variety in the performance of participants. Unlike other comedy shows on stage, it is not easy to predict them. It is not comments and counter-punches’.
‘I love to anchor shows. I feel my strength is connecting with audience on stage shows. But managing the camera was a challenge. We have to be watchful of it. I enjoyed interacting with contestants and judges’, he adds.
