Chennai: A six hour-long meeting in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on Friday, attended by top officials of Tamilnadu and Kerala, resulted in both sides vowing to settle water issues in an amicable manner.
According to sources, the meeting was attended by top officers of Irrigation and Electricity departments. They discussed the inter-State water disputes, including Parambikulam-Aliyar Project and Mullaiperiyar.
“We hope to settle these matters amicably and as early as possible, hopefully within two to three months,” Kerala’s Water Resources Minister K Krishnan Kutty said.
The meeting comes days after Tamilnadu stated in the Supreme Court that the flood havoc that occurred in Kerala in 2018 and 2019 was not caused by the water that flowed from Mullaiperiyar dam.
In an affidavit, Tamilnadu pointed out that more quantity of water flowed to Periyar from the dams in Kerala than the water from Mullaperiyar dam.
However, Kerala informed its High Court recently that the Mullaiperiyar dam, operated by Tamilnadu, is exceptionally vulnerable because of its large catchment area and limited storage capacity.
