Chennai: Amid claims that expelled AIADMK leader V K Sasikala would come out from jail soon, an information obtained through RTI Act says she would be released only on 27 January, 2021, after she fully served her sentence.
That too, she would be released on 27 January, 2021 only if she pays Rs 10 crore fine. Or else, her release would be delayed by one more year, it is said.
Sasikala’s counsel recently said that while State and special remissions could not apply for her as she is convicted under the Prevention of Corruption Act, she could be released early for ‘good behaviour’ ,a clause that applies for all prisoners. She was convicted for four years in the disproportionate assets case on 14 February, 2017.
“As per the Karnataka jail manual her term will be reduced to 43 months from 48 if they apply good behaviour. We believe they will follow this and allow her to be released early,” according to advocate Raja Sentura Pandian.
Late last month, the benami prohibition unit of the Income Tax department began the process of attaching properties related to Sasikala and worth Rs 300 crore in and around Chennai.
A notice in this regard has been served to Sasikala at the Parappana Agrahara prison near Bengaluru where she is currently serving a four year sentence in a Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case.
The department had also served notices in this regard to the benami companies and the various Sub-Registrar officers (SROs) under whose jurisdiction the properties are situated.
