Chennai: After almost being shut for 135 days, the Koyambedu food grain market has been opened today.
Koyambedu Food Grains Traders Association said that they will extend full support to the measures taken by the government. The association said that proper social distancing will be followed in the market.
“As a precautionary measure, kabasura kudineer will be given to everyone who visits the market,” the association said.
A few resolutions including one thanking the government and officials for reopening the market was passed during the association’s general body meeting.
Vendors were permitted to open the shops, clean it and replace old stocks with new ones yesterday.
The market has been allowed to open from 9 am to 6 pm. However, traders want the market to open from 3 am so that once the vegetable market opens on 28 September, it will be easy for vendors to buy both vegetables and foodgrains at a stretch thus boosting trade.
Similarly, traders are also opposing a clampdown on two-wheelers which are banned once the market starts operating. At present, only four wheelers are allowed inside the market.
