Chennai: Based on intelligence, a passenger from Chennai who arrived from Dubai by Emirates Airlines flight EK544 was intercepted at exit of Customs arrival hall.
According to an official release, on personal search two plastic pouches of gold paste were found stitched inside his underwear and 412 grams of gold valued Rs 21.4 lakh of 24 karat purity was recovered. One gold kada weighing 98 grams valued at Rs 5 lakh was also recovered from his trouser pocket. On search of his hand bag, five drones and two iPhone 11 valued at Rs 5.6 lakh were recovered. Total Rs 32 lakh worth gold, drones and iPhones were recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962. The passenger was arrested.
On Tuesday, three passengers- one from Virudhnagar and two from Kadappa – who arrived from Doha and Kuwait by flights Indigo 6E 8713 and Kuwait Air KU 1343 were intercepted at exit. On personal search one passenger, one gold kada was recovered from his pant pocket. One gold chain and one gold cut bit each were recovered from pant pockets of other two passengers. Total 586 grams of gold valued at Rs. 30.6 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962.
Gold worth Rs 57 lakh along with drones and iPhones worth Rs 5.6 lakh, totally valued at Rs 62.6 lakh were recovered and seized.
Further investigation is under process, said Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport.
