Chennai: With growing opposition against the Farmers Bill, protests were held in many places of the State as part of the nation wide bandh against the bills today.
As part of their protest against the farm bills that were passed in the Parliament, several farmers’ bodies have announced a nationwide strike today. As many as 31 farmers’ organisations, including Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), have supported the Bharat Bandh. Shops were shut in several States in support of the bandh. Tight security was given in sensitive areas.
Various farmers’ organisations, members of CPI(M) held protests in Trichy, Dindigul, Thanjavur and several other districts of Tamilnadu.
Farmers from National South Indian River Interlinking Farmersā Association carried out a protest by sitting outside District Collector’s office in Trichy with human skulls, chained hands and nooses around their necks to demonstrate against farm bills. Similar protests were held in several other places as well.
Responding to the protests, State Agriculture Minister R Dorai Kannu said that the farm bills will not affect the life of farmers.
It may be noted that an āall-partyā meeting convened by DMK on 21 September has decided to hold a state-wide protest against the farmers Bills passed in Parliament on 28 September.
Rajya Sabha on 20 Spetember passed the two farm bills — Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020.
The two bills were passed by the Lok Sabha on 17 September.
