New Delhi: With the Union government coming up with more relaxations, there seems to be no good news when it comes to the fatalities caused by Coronavirus. The country’s death toll has crossed one-lakh mark today, thus making it as the third nation in the world to do so.

According to Union Health Ministry data released this morning, the total Coronavirus cases mounted to 64,73,544 with 79,476 new infections being reported in a day.

The death toll has climbed to 1,00,842 with the virus claiming 1,069 lives in a span of 24 hours, data said.

The total recoveries have surged to 54,27,706, while there are 9,44,996 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprises 14.60 per cent of the total caseload, the data showed.

As many as 25 States and Union Territories (UTs) have reported a fall in the number of active cases during the last week, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) today.

“25 States/UTs have reported a fall in the number of Active Cases during the last week. Higher number of daily recoveries and persistently regressing fatality rate are leading to the lower number of active cases on a daily basis,” the Ministry tweeted.

At least 76.62 per cent of the active coronavirus cases have been reported from 10 states and UTs, it said on Friday.

The Covid-19 case fatality rate was recorded at 1.56 per cent. India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on 7 August, 30 lakh on 23 August and 40 lakh on 5 September. It went past 50 lakh on 16 September and crossed 60 lakh on 28 September.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 7,78,50,403 samples have been tested up to 2 October, of which 11,32,675 were tested on Friday.

Meanwhile, the global tally of Coronavirus cases stands at 34,817,275. While 25,879,985 have recovered, 1,032,708 have died so far. The US, the worst-hit country, has 7,549,076 cases. It is followed by India, which has 64,73,544 cases, Brazil (4,882,231) and Russia (1,194,643).
