Chennai: With the Opposition parties in Tamilnadu, including the DMK, taking objection to ticket booking SMS messages were received in Hindi and termed it as an attempt by the Centre to impose Hindi in the state, the Southern Railway has clarified that language was optional and the passenger concerned has opted for Hindi.
Hence the SMS was received by him in Hindi, a Southern Railway release here said. It said there were tweets forwarded by some alleging that a train passenger received message pertaining to ticket reservation in Hindi apparently causing inconvenience in understanding its content.
“In this regard it is clarified that while registering the details under the section titled ‘profile’ in the IRCTC website, one needs to indicate the preferred language–either English or Hindi, to enable receipt of ticket related messages in the language of one’s
preference”, it said.
In the instant case, in the profile of the person on whose ID the said ticket was booked, the preferred language was indicated as Hindi, the release said. This was the reason why the system generated message was sent in Hindi, which was the preferred language, it added.
Passengers are requested to kindly choose the correct language option while registering their profile in the IRCTC website for booking e-tickets, it said.
