Chennai: Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a potentially blinding condition of the retina that affects the immature blood vessels in a premature newborn.
The retina is responsible for converting light to visual messages that is in turn sent to the brain. ROP if severe can result in pulling away or detachment of the retina.
Several studies indicate that the incidence of ROP in low birth weight and premature babies ranges from 38 – 51.9 per cent in India. Out of the approximate 26 million annual live births in India, around 8.7 per cent of newborns in India are less than 2000 grams in weight.
This would imply that almost two million newborns are at risk for developing ROP. Approximately 1 in 5 such babies are said to have severe form of this disease which has a grave long term impact on the quality of life of these children.
If caught earlier on, through various screening programs, the progress and complications of ROP can be prevented. Following the guidelines, Aditya Jyot Foundation for Twinkling Little Eyes conducts screening programs for neonates born prematurely (born before 36 weeks of pregnancy), neonates born with low birth weight (less than 2000g at birth), neonates with high risk factors such as prolonged hospitalization and oxygen support, blood transfusions, etc.
The foundation is holding “The 4th Aditya Jyot Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Public Endowment Oration”. The ceremony is planned virtually for the very first time.
