Chennai: Actress and BJP functionary Khushbu Sundar was detained by the police this morning, when she was on her way from Chennai to Chidambaram, to stage a protest against VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan for his hate speech against Hindu women.
“When Khushbu was proceeding to Chidambaram on East Coast Road, she was stopped near Muttukadu by the police and detained. She and other BJP members were taken to a hall nearby. She is expected to be released soon with a warning to not go to Chidambaram,” sources said.
Earlier, the police denied permission for the agitation slated to be held today in Chidambaram, the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Thirumavalavan.
A couple of days ago, Khushbu said the words used by Thirumavalavan to describe women cannot be accepted in public life.
VCK leader is an elected representative, but his speech and choice of words cannot be accepted. Believing a religion or not is a private matter, but denigrating women quoting a religion cannot be tolerated, Khushbu said.
This is not an issue with the religion, but you have denigrated the women following a religion. Such sarcastic words show the respect Thirumavalavan has for women, Khushbu said.
A video clip recorded in September 2020, during a webinar organised on ‘Periyar and Indian Politics’ is now being circulated on social media stating that the VCK chief has insulted women by calling them ‘prostitutes’.
In the video, he said, “How are women valued on Sanatana Dharma? How are they treated? Generations after generation, how are they oppressed? How are they taken advantage of? What does Sanatana Dharma say about women? Women were basically created by God as prostitutes. All women are prostitutes, as per Hindu dharma, Manu dharma. Women are secondary to men, this is the same for Brahmin women and for women from other communities. This is what Sanatana Dharma says”.
