Attack on BJP’s Madurai office, gang vandalise PM portraits

Chennai: The BJP’s rural district office in Madurai city was ransacked by an unidentified gang at Melamadai locality on Sunday evening, resulting in high tension.

Police said, the gang armed with wooden logs barged into the office, went to the first floor and ransacked it.

The gang also damaged the portraits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP State President L Murugan and also plastic chairs and furniture.

As the news spread, a large number of BJP men assembled in front of the office and staged a road roko agitation on the busy Sivaganga road demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.

Madurai City Deputy Commissioner R Shiva Prasad visited the BJP office and held inquiries.

A large number of police personnel were deployed at Melamadai as the situation remained tense.

Police also stepped up patrolling in sensitive areas to prevent any backlash. Police have collected CCTV footages to trace the gang.

The attack on BJP office took place hours after Murugan was denied entry in a route where a place of worship was located at Thirupalai.

Murugan was going on a procession to participate in ‘Namma Ooru Pongal’ event organised by the party as part of the State-wide Pongal celebrations.

Even as the police held talks with the people belonging to that community, a stone and footwear was hurled into the crowd, in which a car belonging to a BJP member was reportedly damaged.

Police held talks with the protesters and ensured the procession continued in the other route.

Police were investigating whether the attack of the BJP office was a sequel to this incident.
