Chennai: Online crowdfunding is gaining momentum in Chennai, with several lakhs of rupees raised to help various children lead a new lease of life.
According to a press release, when seven-year-old Betina was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, a liver transplant was the only way out.
Venkatesan, the campaign manager of Betina Fundraiser on Milaap shared his experience on the campaign.
He said, “People start fundraisers for liver ailments from Chennai on our platform. For campaigns specifically for children, we have seen an overwhelming response from donors across the world. The average cost for a liver-related ailment is mostly expensive. Betina’s fundraiser was a unique experience for my team since the hospital helped the family to start a fundraiser and ensure her timely treatment. For this fundraiser, nearly 600 donors contributed and raised the required treatment amount”.
Another fund-raising campaign was done for one-year-old Haasinisri, who was suffering from Wilms’ tumour. When her doctors estimated that the treatment will cost around 20 lakh, a campaign was started with Milaap to raise money.
The campaign became successful and raised around 18 lakhs with 1600 donors from different parts of the world.
Speaking about its success, Milaap’s campaign manager for the fundraiser, Yogesh, said, “The child’s father Sivarama Krishnan started the online fundraising campaign for the first time. He reached out to his colleagues, close friends from his school and college network who are staying in Australia, Canada, Qatar and US. Within a few days, he was able to reach the target amount”.
