Chennai: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam inaugurated the Jallikattu event at Alanganallur in Madurai today.
Senior Ministers, Members of Legislative Assembly, senior Revenue and Police officials were also present at the occasion.
Palaniswami gave prizes to bull tamers Thirunavukarasu and Vijay and the owner of the bull that won in the Avaniyapuram Jallikattu.
A total of 800 bulls and 655 bull tamers participated in the day-long event, which is being held in compliance with Covid-19 guidelines.
All players and bull owners were allowed to participate only after they tested negative for Covid-19.
The Tamilnadu government on 23 December granted permission to hold Jallikattu, the State’s most popular bull taming sport, with certain restrictions.
A government order said that the players have to produce Covid-19 negative certificate and the number of spectators cannot be more than 50 per cent of the gathering capacity. The order also said that not more than 300 players can participate in an Jallikattu event.
“Not more than 150 tamers shall be allowed in Yeruthu Vidum event. All spectators should undergo thermal scanning. Bull owners and tamers should undergo Covid test. Face masks are compulsory for everyone,” the order said.
