Chennai: Lady’s finger is one of the most commonly used vegetables. Though most children do not like it due to its sticky nature, it is fed to them stating that it helps in improving memory power. We cannot vouch how far that is true.
But what we can say for sure is that one lady’s finger which has grown in a terrace garden at Perambur is sure to stay in our memory for its unusual size. It is at present 11.5 inches and is continuing to grow.
Speaking about the vegetable, Mervyn Rajesh, who has cultivated it on his terrace said that he was surprised to see its unusual size.
“I started home farming as a hobby and first started growing flowers. Later, I thought of feeding fresh vegetables to my kids and starting planting vegetable seeds. Among the seeds that I planted most of them were lady’s finger. After almost close to two months, the sapling started grow and started yielding vegetables. However this one Lady’s finger alone continued to outgrow the remaining which caught my attention,” he said.
He further said that he measured the vegetable and it was around 12 inches. “I later googled and found out that the world record for the biggest lady’s finger in 16.5 inches. I have a feeling that this lady’s finger might break the record. But we will have to wait and watch. The vegetable continues to be healthy,” he said.
He further said that no special attention was given to the vegetable. Mervyn’s neighbours are in awe of the lady’s finger and continue to keep track of it everyday.
