New Delhi: Twitter, which was pulled up by the government for non-compliance, has blocked nearly 97 per cent of the handles flagged by the IT Ministry.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had directed the micro-blogging platform to take down 1,435 accounts in two separate orders for allegedly spreading misinformation on farmersā protest.
The Ministry had questioned Twitter’s delay in taking action on its order to block provocative content that could impact public law and order, whereas the American company had been quick to crack down when a similar instance occurred at US Capitol Hill.
Of the 257 handles that were sought to be blocked over the controversial hashtag, 220 have been taken down.
While Twitter had earlier refused to comply with the governmentās requests, on Wednesday, the IT secretary expressed displeasure over differential treatment by Twitter in its handling of the problems on Capitol Hill in the US and Red Fort in Delhi and insisted that ‘lawfully passed orders are binding’ on any business entity.
