Chennai: Chennai and coastal Tamilnadu are expected to get rainfall with thunderstorms over the next 24 hours owing to the cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal.

The rain may extend till 22 February, according to weather experts. Speaking to the media, S Balachander, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said, ‘Under the influence of cyclonic circulation over Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lankan coast, Tamilnadu and Puducherry will get rain for the next five days.’

Over the next 24 hours, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected over coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Light to moderate rain can be expected over southern districts and districts surrounding the Western Ghats, said officials. In the next 48 hours, thunderstorms are expected in isolated parts of the State.

Some parts of Chennai reported light rains on Friday under the influence of the weather system, according to the Meteorological Department.

A trace of rainfall was reported in the weather station at Meenambakkam, Ennore, Villivakkam and Coonoor on Friday.
