Chennai: City-based Akash Fertility Centre and Hospital conducted a cancer screening camp for women to mark the International Women’s Day and urged the government to provide free vaccine to women suffering from cervical cancer.
Hospital co-founder Dr K S Jeyarani Kamaraj said the free screening camp exclusively for women was jointly organised by the Gynaecological Society of Southern India, Indian Gynaecological Society, All India Democratic Women’s Association and the International Sexology Association.
Speaking on the occasion, she said women were subjected to various diseases and diseases such as breast cancer and cervical cancer could be avoided.
Stating that women could subject themselves to tests to identify whether they were suffering from cancer, she said vaccines were available for the cervical cancer caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).
“Since this vaccine is expensive and costs about Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000, the government should come fowards and offer it free to women,” Dr Jeyarani said.
This would held in reducing the cancer rate to a great extent, she added.
