Chennai: Following an order issued by Chief Minister M K Stalin, women in the State can avail free bus travel from today.
Sources said all transport corporations have been given instructions to implement the order in full spirit from today morning.
Soon after being sworn-in Stalin on Friday signed five files to implement major promises made in the DMK Assembly election manifesto, including offering Rs 4,000 as Covid-19 relief to family cardholders, free travel in ordinary buses for women and reducing the retail price of Aavin milk by Rs 3 per litre from 16 May.
The Chief Minister, fulfilling a poll promise, announced free travel for all working women and girls pursuing higher education on board government buses (ordinary fare) in cities across the State from Saturday.
