Chennai: Amid doubts over the Covid-19 variant driving the surge in Tamilnadu, INSACOG — India’s consortium of top scientific institutions engaged in Covid-19 genome sequencing — has reportedly sought more sampling data from the state.

Quoting sources, an ET report said initial data has proved to be inconclusive, which has caused the concern if some other factor or variant was at play.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohan Kameshwaran of Madras ENT Research Foundation said research was on to see if the new coronavirus variant affected immunity.

“Patients developing symptoms nearly 7 to 14 days after discharge, should approach hospitals soon. If diagnosed earlier, it can be treated through surgeries and medication,” said the expert, who is a part of the TN Mucormycosis task force.

The number of fresh Covid-19 cases across Tamilnadu dipped further to 27,936 on Monday. Coimbatore continued to report the highest number of cases, 3,488, while Chennai’s case-load fell marginally to 2,596.
