New Delhi: Around eight of every 10 (82 per cent) of Covid-19 infections in the past three months (May, June and July) were caused by the highly infectious Delta variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, as per data from the Indian Sars-CoV-2 Genomic Consortium or INSACOG dashboard.
It highlightsthat most cases in India are now being caused by this variant of concern which is also behind the recent surge of cases in the US.
The Delta variant is much more contagious, more likely to break through protections afforded by the vaccines and may cause more severe disease than all other known versions of the virus, according to an internal presentation circulated within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Over all, nearly two in three coronavirus disease (Covid-19) infections in the country so far have been caused by mutated variants, according to data from INSACOG.
