Chennai: Tamilnadu reported 1947 fresh cases of coronavirus late on Friday night. Among them, Chennai accounted for 215 cases, which is the second-highest after Coimbatore’s 230.

The fresh cases took the tally to 25,57,611. As many as 2,193 people were discharged. While the overall active caseload in the State dropped to 20,934, active cases rose in Chennai (1,569), Coimbatore (1,917) and Erode (1,404).

Though the rise in fresh infections was smaller than the previous day’s figure — cases rose marginally by 88 — at least 10 to 12 districts recorded a rise in the daily caseload.

The test positivity rate in Tamilnadu stands at 1.2 per cent, with the highest of 2.3 per cent in Thanjavur, followed by 2 per cent in Erode. As many as 27 more deaths were reported, taking the total to 34,050.

As the daily case count in Tamilnadu continued to rise for the second consecutive day with 1,947 new cases being recorded on Friday compared to 1,859 on Thursday, officials are taking a string of measures to control the spread.
