Chennai: The Election Commission announced on Tuesday that by-election to one of three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Tamilnadu will be held on 13 September.
At a time when it was expected that the ruling DMK’s strength in the Upper House of the Parliament would increase after the 13 September by-election, there are speculations in political circles that the DMK may leave the seat for the Congress.
It is said that Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin had already given his assurance to the Congress, the DMK’s alliance partner, in this regard.
Since the DMK enjoys a comfortable majority in the State Assembly, its nominee would easily get elected in the 13 September by-poll.
The EC said the election will be conducted by strictly following the Covid-19 guidelines and maintaining social distancing norms.
The by-poll will be held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of AIADMK member A Mohammedjan on 23 March, the ECI said in a release.
Filing of nominations will begin on 24 August with the issue of notification. The last date for filing of nominations is 31 August.
The scrutiny will take place on September one and the las date for withdrawals is 13 September.
Polling will be held on 13 September between 9 am and 4 pm and the counting of votes will take place same day at 5 pm.
