Salem police rescue kidnapped boy, arrest man


Salem: A teenager who was kidnapped by a man demanding a ransom of Rs 50 lakh, was rescued by the Salem police in a swift operation.

Police also arrested the accused identified as C Selvakumar, 39, for kidnapping the 14-year-old boy. The accused was said to be an interior decorator.

Speaking to reporters, Superintendent of Police M Sree Abhinav said the parents of boy lodged a missing complaint at the Thollasampatti Police Station. The boy’s father Palaniswami was a daily wager and mother Latha was employed in a textile showroom near Panjuukallpatti.

The accused called Saravanan, the employer of Latha, and demanded Rs 50 lakh to release the boy. Later he sent a video of the victim to Saravanan from the cell phone of a migrant worker.

“After the video was received, four special teams were formed under the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Omalur, D Sangeetha to nab the culprit and rescue the boy,” the SP said.

After investigation, the workshop and residence of Selvakumar was raided and the victim was rescued.
