Chennai: Ruling DMK candidate M Mohd Abdullah is all set to be elected unopposed to Rajya Sabha from the Tamilnadu Assembly.
In all four candidates have filed their papers for the elections to one of the three vacant seats to be held on 13 September.
After the last date of filing of nominations ended yesterday, the nomination of Abdullah, who is also the DMK’s NRI wing leader, was found to be in order, during scrutiny Wednesday.
The nomination of three independents–N Agni Sri Ramachandran, Dr K Padmarajan and K Madhivanan–were not found in order and were rejected on scrutiny.
Following this Abdullah is all set to be elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from the State Assembly and an announcement is expected to be made after the last date of withdrawals on 3 September.
With this the strength of the DMK in the upper house of Parliament will increase to eight from the present seven members.
The Election Commission had on 17 August announced that by-election to one of three vacant Rajya Sabha seats will be held on 13 September by strictly following the Covid-19 guidelines and maintaining social distancing norms.
The bypoll will be beld to fill the vacancy caused by the death of AIADMK member A Mohammedjan on 23 March, the ECI said.
By-elections to fill up two other vacancies, caused by the resignation of AIADMK Members K P Munususamy and R Vaithilingam following their election to the State Assembly, will be notified later.
