Chennai: After a few media reports claimed that one case of Nipah has been detected in Tamilnadu, the State government has refuted them and said there are no such cases in Tamilnadu.
Tamilnadu Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan said that the said media reports were wrong. He also said that the Coimbatore Collector had gone to the border with Kerala to step up checks after a Nipah death was reported in the neighbouring State.
Meanwhile, Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran has said he was misquoted about detection of a Nipah virus case in Tamilnadu. He was quoted earlier as saying that a case of Nipah virus was identified in Coimbatore. But he later tweeted, saying that it’s a wrong information and that Coimbatore is taking all necessary precautions in the border.
On Sunday, a 12-year old boy succumbed to the Nipah virus in Kerala. Since then, several cases of the infection have been surfacing in the State.
Stressing that the Health department’s priority is to strengthen contact tracing and determine the source of infection, Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Monday said there are chances that the 12-year old boy who succumbed to Nipah may have come in contact with more number of people.
