Chennai: The PMK announced walking out of the AIADMK-led front on Tuesday night, after it said that it would go it alone in the rural local bodies elections.
The decision seems to have surprised the AIADMK, which had hoped to go to the polls along with the PMK and the Bharatiya Janata Party.
PMK president G K Mani said in a statement that at a virtual meeting, it was ‘unanimously’ decided to go it alone, ‘considering the party’s interests’.
Party founder Dr S Ramadoss and Youth Wing leader Dr Anbumani Ramadoss endorsed the decision.
On 13 September, the Tamilnadu State Election Commission announced that polls for rural local bodies would be held on October 6 and 9 in the nine reconstituted districts.
AIADMK and BJP did not immediately react to PMK’s announcement. The three parties had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha and 2021 Assembly polls in an alliance.
