Chennai: The Tamilnadu and Kerala governments have agreed to set up technical sub-committees to assess the Nirar-Nallar multipurpose straight-cut scheme to avoid a long circuitous route and convey water from Upper Nirar to river Nallar.
The virtual discussions that were held on Friday included building a new dam under Pandiyar-Punnampuzha project to divert water to Noyyal and Bhavani basin in Tamilnadu.
An official release from the Tamilnadu government said that separate panels were established earlier to discuss the Parambikulam-Aliyar and Pandiyaru-Punnambuzha issues and two meetings had held earlier in 2019 and 2020.
As far as the Mullaiperiyar dam is concerned, Tamilnadu was to strengthen the baby dam in line with the Supreme Courtās judgment, and an inspection conducted two months ago revealed that 15 trees were to be cut down.
‘We have sought permission to cut down these trees. The Principal Secretary of Keralaās Department of Forests assured us that he would consider the request and take a decision,’ Public Works Department Secretary Sandeep Saxena said.
