Chennai: Three fishermen from Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu, who ventured into the sea for fishing Friday night, were attacked by a group of ten armed Sri Lankan fishermen in the high seas.
After attacking the Tamilnadu fishermen, they also seized the fishing gears, Global Positioning System (GPS) and the day’s catch to the tune of Rs five lakh from their fishing boat, sources said.
The three injured fishermen were from Arcottuthurai near Vedaranyam, who returned
to the shore Saturday, were admitted to Nagapattinam government hospital.
Sources said fishermen Sivakumar, Siva and his father Chinnathambi had ventured into the on a boat owned by Sivakumar. While they were invovled in fishing near the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) southeast off Vedaranyam, a group of 10 armed Sri Lankans on board two fibre boats intercepted them.
Alleging that the Indian fishermen had trespassed into Sri Lankan territorial waters, the Lankan fishermen attacked them. While Sivakumar was attacked with a knife Siva and Chinnathambi were attacked with an iron rod.
District Collector Arun Thamburaj, who visited the injured at the hospital, said the Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Security Group were informed about the incident.
