Chennai: The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) has directed Karnataka to immediately release the balance quantum of water due for Tamilnadu. Also, according to the Tamilnadu government, the CWMA dropped discussion on Mekedatu reservoir project following ‘strong protest’ from TN, Kerala and Puducherry.
The Authority directed Karnataka to immediately release ‘some quantity’ of water towards making good the shortfall in realisation of the latter’s share of Cauvery water.
The release should be as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s decision of 2007, which was modified by the Supreme Court in 2018.
The Tamilnadu government also pointed out that the Karnataka government released 85.8 tmc of water instead of 119.5 tmc till 26 September.
Chairman of CWMA, S K Haldar told reporters that it has been ordered to release the water to Tamilnadu instantly.
