E Balagurusamy

Chennai: Former Anna University Vice Chancellor E Balagurusamy has said Tamilnadu is the only state opposing NEET.

‘Some leaders of Tamilnadu indulge in propaganda against NEET. These leaders are either politically motivated or have not understood the purpose of NEET in the right spirit and context,’ he said.

According to him, entrance tests are a part of admission process of all higher educational institutions and universities all over the world and it is all the more important for admission to professional courses like medicine and engineering.

‘It is really amusing to read the report of A K Rajan Committee on NEET. It is totally a lopsided report based on skewed statistics,’ he said.

According to him, the Rajan Committee is silent about Navodya Schools. ‘These schools run by the Union government provide high quality, free education to students from rural areas and have proved themselves to be as good as Kendra Vidyalayas and could be a solution to the problem of NEET. Tamilnadu government, if they are really concerned about rural poor students, would do well by starting Navodya Schools in every district, thus enabling rural students face successfully the exams like NEET.’
