Chennai: For the first time in more than seven months, Tamilnadu has recorded fewer than 1,000 new Covid infections.
The State recorded 990 cases on Monday as the declining trend of numbers continues. With this, the total number of cases in the State touched 27,03,613.
This is the third time during the ongoing pandemic that fresh cases have fallen below the 1,000 mark.
The last time the daily count fell below the 1,000 mark was on 30 December, 2020, when as many as 957 fresh cases were reported. On that day the State’s overall tally was 8,16,132 cases.
However, public health experts said it may be too soon to celebrate. On 18 March, when cases were slowly increasing ahead of the second wave, Tamilnadu reported 989 new cases and eventually hit a peak of 36,184 cases a day on 21 May.
On Monday, Coimbatore recorded the highest number of 117 cases, followed by 111 in Chennai. All the other districts reported less than 100 cases, with Chengalpattu reporting 85 cases.
On Monday another 1,153 persons were discharged after treatment. So far, 26,56,168 persons have been discharged.
